If I could bottle finding the perfect material for each person I would have opulent wealth and be the QUEEN of Broadway! But honestly, music is so subjective that it’s pretty much an impossible task. The truth is, there is no perfect song. There are so many wonderful songs that fit so many shows!
I find picking material a lot like shopping for the perfect jeans. The perfect pair HAS to be out there somewhere, and yet I have a closet full of jeans that are just ok and do the job. Do you know what I mean? Or….you have ONE perfect pair in your closet but they are starting to lose their luster and getting less and less use every week.
This is always a topic of discussion with EVERY student. You are not alone! I know, it’s so hard to find the song that shows you off perfectly while not being overdone and yet is still exciting. I also know the stress that auditions bring so perhaps I can make it a little easier for you.
So where to start? The following sites are typical places I look and listen for new material. TRUST ME when I say, you HAVE to listen to the music. You need to have an opinion and not just blindly take whatever someone gives you!
Take a chance on research and look through the following (not in any particular order):
https://open.spotify.com/user/broadwaybrokendown – This one is my first stop usually. I have a really wide knowledge of musical theatre material and I can typically go to the right playlist to start my research journey.
I also advise you to make a list and keep it organized by type of song. I do this on my Spotify, but you could just write it on a piece of paper so you have some idea when you are looking for a new song!
Hope this helps you on your musical journey!
